ND Water – Garrison Diversion News – January 2026

The crews working on the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP) enjoyed a longer than typical construction season thanks to mild spring and fall weather in 2025. Construction activities continued into December with a total of 12 miles of transmission pipe installed to date this year. That brings the total amount of pipe in the ground to 29.75 miles of the 125-mile pipeline.

Crews started the 2025 construction season early thanks to a mild spring. Now they are hoping the weather will hold out this fall so they can continue pipe installation as long as possible. In 2024, construction wrapped up in November. If conditions cooperate again this year, the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP) could enjoy an almost unheard of seven-month construction season. As of mid-October, 28 miles of the 125-mile buried pipeline are in the ground.

With North Dakota’s 2025 legislative session now in the rearview mirror, the co-sponsors of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP) are adjusting the work plan for the 2025-2027 biennium to match the budget approved by the legislature. Garrison Diversion Conservancy District (Garrison Diversion) and Lake Agassiz Water Authority (LAWA) requested $221 million from
the Department of Water Resources Budget through House Bill 1020.

The Garrison Diversion Conservancy District (Garrison Diversion) was the proud recipient of the Partnership Award presented by North Dakota State University (NDSU) at the Oakes Irrigation Field Trials in August. Garrison Diversion has supported the Oakes Irrigation Research Site (OIRS) since it was founded in 1970.
